Practical 7
Blog Reflection:
Briefly reflect on lessons learnt from this practical:
1. Which criteria did you use to evaluate Stomp.com? Why did you choose this criteria? What lessons have you learnt from this activity?
2. How do you feel about sharing your views via Wiki?
Yesterday I had class test. After class test, we started lecture " Evaluation of Internet Resources: Evaluation Criteria". Knowing about the different evaluation criteria and later discuss the problems with internet information. I was asked to read the article "Citizen Journalism" and write something short about it on the given Post-IT. What I had written was "Someone who shares information, news and experiences with people". Something like that, if I did not remember wrongly.
Then we went to visit the website http://www.stomp.com.sg. We were formed into groups. In our group, we are to based on what we had read in the article and using the criteria for evaluating websites, comment and justify whether we think Citizen Journalism is effective in Singapore's context. My group thinks that it can be effective and not. It is effective in a way that it raises awareness. People go to STOMP website to read news which the TV will not show. Example the latest new on "4 Men Molesting A Women In Countdown Party". After this news, the public will be more aware of the foreign workers in Singapore. Nowadays more foreign workers are coming over to Singapore to earn a living.
It is not effective in a way that it will influence people. Example there is an article about secondary school students drinking vodka and yet they still take a photo of it. If other students read about and might learn. It is bad. Besides that there is little intellectual content and sometimes it lacks credibility. The public goes there to vent their anger out but not concerning about the matter.
Reflection 1
Which criteria did you use to evaluate Stomp.com? Why did you choose this criteria? What lessons have you learnt from this activity?
The main three criteria which I use to evaluate Stomp.com are purpose, coverage and usability. I think the aims and objectives of the content have been clearly stated in Stomp.com because it has different kinds of news posted on web, which cannot be seen on TV or read from newspapers. There will be different purposes to each news posted and also to different target audience. The amount and quality of how the news is being published and analyzed are shown and public can just comment on how they feel about it. Usability is used to evaluate Stomp.com as well. The information in Stomp.com are being well-organized, allowing people to navigate around the source to locate the news easily. Of course not forgetting the rest of the criteria - authority, accuracy, currency, accessibility, presentation and arrangement, which plays a part in the evaluation. I learned that evaluating a Citizen Journalism website cannot be seen as a whole thing and it is not easy to be done either. And there are actually a number of categories to take note of which makes the whole website successful.
Reflection 2
How do you feel about sharing your views via Wiki?
I feel that sharing views is good. We can learn from each other about how we think and feel from the comments and information given. Sometimes, I might learn new things from others or vice versa. And from there, I am able to expand my knowledge and thinking cap. Besides that, if I am doing research, I can understand more about the research topic since others have posted on web already. Wiki is user-friendly as anyone can edit the information if one finds out there is false fact and also add new information to be shared around. Both can be easily done.
